A baseball team’s future is built upon its farm system, whether a team keeps those players or trades those players to acquire more talent.

For the New York Yankees the farm system has produced some talented players of late. But, after MLB Pipeline re-ranked its Top 100 prospects and Top 30 prospects for every organization, it also re-ranked all the farm systems.

The Yankees’ system ended up taking a precipitous drop, as it was ranked No. 21.

That’s a far cry from its preseason ranking, when it was No. 13. The Yankees as a system haven’t been ranked this low since being No. 19 in the site’s 2021 midseason rankings.

So, what happened? Per MLB.com:

The Yankees have had difficulty finding healthy and productive outfielders this season, though that should change in the near future with (Spencer) Jones, (Jaason) Domínguez and (Everson) Pereira on the way. While those hitters hog most of the headlines in the system, New York quietly does a fine job of finding pitchers in the middle rounds of the Draft and upgrading them. That group includes Chase Hampton, who's pushing for the Top 100 a year after signing as a sixth-rounder, as well as Will Warren, Richard Fitts and Brock Selvidge.

Jones (No. 78), Domínguez (No. 79) and Pereira, OF (No. 80) were the Yankees’ only three Top 100 prospects. But Hampton is No. 4 overall and another pitcher, Drew Thorpe, is No. 5 and was just named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week after an exceptional start at Double-A Somerset.

It sounds like the Yankees have more talent in their Top 30 than shows up in these rankings, and it could be that most of that talent is a couple of years away from joining the Majors.

But, with Domínguez and Pereira projecting as 2024 call-ups, and Jones as a 2025 call-up, the Yankees appear to be preparing to get some more help soon.
