New York Yankees GM Won't Fire Aaron Boone
It's been a nightmare season for the New York Yankees with their general manager Brian Cashman calling it a "disaster" at his press conference. Despite having the second highest payroll in baseball, the offensive numbers rank towards the bottom and their starting rotation has been a revolving door due to injuries.
As it stands right now, the Yankees will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and are likely to finish last in their division for the first time since 1990.
If there was ever a time for the franchise to make changes, it seems like it would come after this season.
However, according to Andy Martino of SNY, it's unlikely that any changes will be made. With Cashman coming back in his role next year, he wants to keep manager Aaron Boone.
"There is only one way Boone will be fired, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the Yankees’ inner workings: managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner would have to overrule GM Brian Cashman and his baseball operations department. And that has never before happened with a managerial decision," reports Martino.
The organization is highly collaborative and view Boone as an integral part of of their decision making process that occurs during a daily basis.
Martino continues, "During the 2021 season, there were voices in Steinbrenner’s ear encouraging him to fire Boone and replace him with Buck Showalter, who was working for the YES Network at the time, according to team sources. Cashman wanted to stick with Boone, so the discussion never gained traction."
The GM isn't the only one who is supporting the manager. Players in the clubhouse have jumped to Boone's defense, speaking highly of the culture he's established.
With an owner unlikely to make sweeping changes across his front office or with his manager, it looks like Cashman and Boone will be back for another season in 2024.
