New York Yankees Hire Former All-Star as New Hitting Coach
They have their man.
The New York Yankees are hiring former MLB All-Star Sean Casey to be their next hitting coach, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Casey has agreed to take on the role as Yankee hitting coach through the 2023 season.
General manager Brian Cashman wanted someone from the outside, who would be in sync with manager Aaron Boone, and Casey fits this bill as a former teammate from 1998-2003.
Casey also has strong ties to VP of baseball operations Tim Naehring, who was director of player development during his time with the Cincinnati Reds.
Casey, who played 12 seasons in the big-leagues, is a major change of pace from Dillon Lawson, who mainly relied on analytics and exit velocity.
The Yankees fired Lawson following their loss in the final game of the first half of the regular season on Sunday. Lawson was in his second season as hitting coach for the Yankees.
The Yankees have gone 49-42, and their offense is hitting .231 with .300 on-base percentage and a .710 OPS this season. The offense has been even worse since losing Aaron Judge to a toe injury on June 3.
Casey, 49, hit .302 in the major leagues and made the All-Star team three times in his career.
