He's done for the year.

On Monday, the New York Yankees placed reliever Tommy Kahnle on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, which will knock him out for the rest of the season.

Kahnle's season ended the same way it started: with an injury related to the arm area. The righty missed the first 58 games of the season with right bicep tendinitis.

Upon returning from the IL, Kahnle was lights out. He did not surrender an earned run until his 18th appearance of the year after pitching 16.1 scoreless innings. However, he had a rough go of things ever since, posting a 4.44 ERA in 25 games. His biggest area of weakness was pitching with inherited runners on base and his once nasty changeup was figured out by opponents.

According to manager Aaron Boone, Kahnle's injury popped up after he was unable to recover from Wednesday's outing when he gave up two earned runs and walked four batters against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Regardless of Kahnle's up-and-down season, he is expected to be a piece in the Yankees' bullpen next year. He is under contract for another year and is set to make $5.75 million in 2024.

The Yankees called up reliever Matt Bowman to take Kahnle's spot on the roster. Bowman pitched for the first time since 2019 during the Yankees' series against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees sent him back down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after he gave up a three-run home run to Trevor Story on September 14.
