New York Yankees Targeting Star Outfielder in Trade Market
The New York Yankees have turned the page on their disastrous season and have started looking into what they will do in the future. That has culminated with the front office calling up multiple top prospects, including Jasson Dominguez who has taken the league by storm.
Evaluations have begun for multiple young players, seeing if any of them could be candidates to make the opening day roster in 2024.
While the front office is evaluating their in-house talent, they're also looking at other options to add to their roster when the offseason begins.
One of those players is from the St. Louis Cardinals, who the Yankees wanted to acquire this season.
Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports, "The Cardinals’ Dylan Carlson stands out as a potential trade candidate considering the Yankees’ interest in him before the trade deadline."
The outfielder is in his fourth major league season this year after being taken in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
It's been a struggle for Carlson this year at the plate, putting up his worst numbers since becoming a full-time major league player. He has a slash line of .219/.318/.333 with five home runs and 27 RBI in 76 games. That's a far drop of from his career best in 2021 where he hit .266/.343/.437 with 18 home runs and 65 RBI.
Still, the 24-year-old has immense upside and would provide an established presence in the outfield, something New York is looking to add going into next season according to Kuty.
Chicago Cubs' star Cody Bellinger has also been linked to the Yankees, but he will be an expensive option. It's unclear if ownership and the front office would be willing to shell out another $300 million contract to add to their already high payroll.
Carlson makes sense for New York, who needs to get younger players in the rotation on their roster.
