New York Yankees Would 'Love' Reunion With Star Pitcher
There could be a homecoming in the works.
According to ESPN insider Jeff Passan, the New York Yankees would "love" a reunion with left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery.
However, the Yankees are far from the only team interested in Montgomery.
While the World Series Champion Texas Rangers want to bring the lefty back after acquiring him at last season's trade deadline, their spending outlook is up in the air due to Diamond Sports' bankruptcy and how that will affect the team's television deal and budget.
The Yankees drafted Montgomery in the 2014 MLB Draft and he proceeded to pitch five and a half seasons in the Bronx. New York traded Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals at the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for center fielder Harrison Bader.
Montgomery proceeded to bud into a star for the Cardinals and Rangers, which is why he is now highly sought after on the free agent market.
The Yankees whiffed on Japanese superstar Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency, and it appears that they are attempting to pivot by bringing back Montgomery.
If Carlos Rodon bounces back after a disappointing first season in the Bronx, the Yankees could have a three-headed monster in their rotation with AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole, Rodon and Montgomery.
The Yankees acquired superstar outfielder Juan Soto, Trent Grisham and Alex Verdugo this offseason, but they still must improve their rotation and bullpen. The team has yet to spend any money in free agency, which is why they can potentially splurge on a reunion with Montgomery.
