Padres Ask Yankees For Ridiculous Trade Package In Soto Deal
With the Juan Soto trade news starting to heat up, it seems like the San Diego Padres are fully willing to deal their superstar slugger this offseason.
The New York Yankees are seen to be one of the major suitors to land the outfielder and have been in talks with the Padres to see what type of package it would take to land him.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, the two sides are far apart on getting something done after San Diego asked for a ridiculous trade package from the Yankees.
"According to league sources briefed on talks, San Diego was asking for pitcher Michael King, pitching prospect Drew Thorpe, and as many as four or five other prospects like Randy Vazquez and Jhony Brito. San Diego was also interested in salary relief not just for Soto but for center fielder Trent Grisham, sources say."
Wow.
That is quite the ask for a one-year rental with Soto hitting free agency following the 2024 season.
Michael King is viewed as a valuable piece within New York's organization. Drew Thorpe is their No. 5 overall prospect. Randy Vasquez is their No. 14 overall prospect.
Martino also reports that some of their higher-profile prospects have not been mentioned in the trade package.
"Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe are not involved in these talks, nor are Gleyber Torres, Austin Wells or Everson Periera, per sources," he wrote.
Of course, the Yankees could extend the superstar before he hits the open market, but that would also need to be something that Soto and his agent are willing to agree upon.
With the lucrative contracts that are handed out on the open market now, it seems unlikely they would be interested in that unless it was an offer that blew them away.
So, are trade conversations between the two sides now over?
Not necessarily.
"Sources believe that talks centered around Clarke Schmidt, Vazquez, Brito and possibly Thorpe could get the teams closer to a deal. But as of Friday evening, no deal was close, and the teams were -- temporarily at least -- considering moving on to other business," Martino adds.
It's even more evident that the Padres are willing to deal Soto this offseason, but their asking price might not allow them to trade him unless they lower their ridiculous expectations.
