Red Sox Reportedly Pursuing Ex-Yankees Slugger After Injury-Riddled Season
The Boston Red Sox could end up landing a former member of the New York Yankees before the 2024 season kicks off.
Former Yankees slugger Gio Urshela is a free agent and is looking for his next opportunity after spending the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels. Urshela was traded to the Angels ahead of the 2023 campaign but could only appear in 62 games due to injuries.
Urshela has been a popular free agent and the Yankees even have shown interest in a possible reunion. It's unclear where he will land, but the Red Sox also have reportedly shown interest in him, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.
"It remains relatively unlikely that the Red Sox will make major, impactful additions to their roster before Opening Day," Cotillo said. "But they’re still monitoring the free agent market on both sides of the ball.
"The Red Sox are among the teams who have expressed interest in free agent infielder Gio Urshela, a source confirmed Wednesday. They have not yet separated themselves from the pack or been an aggressor in Urshela’s market, which reportedly also includes the Yankees, (New York Mets), Angels, and (Miami Marlins). As of Feb. 7, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported that Miami and Los Angeles had better offers on the table than the New York teams."
Urshela had the most success of his career as a member of the Yankees from 2019 to 2021. Landing Urshela would go a long way for the Yankees but it sounds like the club will have some stiff competition if they want to get a deal done.
