The New York Yankees are looking to build their starting rotation.

New York entered the offseason hoping to improve the middle of the lineup and already have done just that. Now, they need to focus on adding another top-tier starter in free agency or through trade.

The Yankees have been floated as one of the favorites to land Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto and have been heavily pursuing him. New York isn't alone in its pursuit of Yamamoto and will have an intense amount of competition.

New York recently has met in person with Yamamoto and likely will have to wait at least a week until it finds out if it lands him. In the meantime, one club that reportedly will meet with Yamamoto in person is the Boston Red Sox, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

"Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has already met with the Yankees, (New York Mets), and (San Francisco Giants), will meet with the Red Sox in the coming days, per source. Two or three more teams - including the (Toronto Blue Jays) - will also likely meet with him, sources said."

Yamamoto is the best free-agent pitcher available and if he were to land with the Red Sox it would be devastating. The 25-year-old likely will end up landing a contract somewhere between seven and ten years so if he could land with New York's biggest rival he would hurt the Yankees for the foreseeable future.

The Yankees still seem to be among the favorites to land his services, but they definitely need to worry about the Red Sox.
