Would Yankees Make This Proposed Deal for Shohei Ohtani?
The New York Yankees have never been shy about making a big trade at the deadline, and the Aug. 1 deadline is approaching.
What the Yankees might do is one of the significant questions going into the deadline. The Yankees are trying to get a foothold in the American League Wild Card race, and after the Tampa Bay Rays were swept by the Texas Rangers, the AL East is growing a bit closer.
The Yankees are at the bottom of the division standings but are only a few games out of the Wild Card race.
Is there a deal that could really shake things up for the Yankees and baseball? Well, what if the Yankees dealt for Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani?
The Yankees like stars, and Ohtani is baseball’s brightest. He’s also one of the game’s top designated hitters and pitchers.
But what’s the price? Fox Sports put together deals for 12 different teams that might have interest in Ohtani. Here’s the deal it put together for Ohtani:
The Yankees get Ohtani.
The Angels get OF Jasson Domínguez, INF Oswald Peraza, OF Spencer Jones, INF Gleyber Torres.
It’s a steep price. Domínguez is at Double-A Somerset and is considered the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect by MLB.com. Pereza, an infielder, made his MLB debut last year but his hitting around .200 this season. Torres would be a get for the Angels, an infielder with solid power and average, who once hit 38 home runs in 2019. Jones is the Yankees’ No. 3 prospect and is at High Class-A Hudson Valley.
The logic, per Fox Sports:
Their two most important needs include a big bat and starting pitching depth. Swinging a trade for Ohtani would solve both of the Yankees' biggest problems on their win-now roster. This prospect haul is flooded with big names, particularly with the Martian's lofty expectations, Jones drawing early comps to Aaron Judge, a big-league-ready Peraza and Torres being New York's hottest hitter while Judge works his way back from the injured list.
The Yankees would be giving up some serious talent to bring in Ohtani. But he’s the game’s most talented players and the Yankees would have to find a way to keep Ohtani beyond the 2023 season.
But if the Yankees want Ohtani, that’s one way it could go.
