Yankees Are Trying To Sign Ex-Astros Star Hurler To Help Bolster Bullpen
The New York Yankees are attempting to land one of the top remaining free-agent relievers.
New York likely is close to being done adding this offseason. While this is the case, it wouldn't be surprising to see another move or two this offseason to bolster the bullpen.
The Yankees had the best bullpen in baseball last season but still need to add. A reunion with Wandy Peralta seems likely but another move also is needed.
One player who continues to be floated as an option for New York is former Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros stud reliever Héctor Neris, according to SNY's Andy Martino.
"With most of their offseason work completed, the Yankees and Mets remain engaged in the free agent bullpen market, and both have spoken with the representatives for former Phillies and Astros reliever Hector Neris, according to league sources," Martino said. Those sources pointed to the win-now Yankees as a more likely fit for the 34-year-old Neris but also said that Neris had serious interest from clubs outside of New York.
"His asking price -- which, according to sources, is for one or two years at $7-11 million per year -- would also fit the Mets' budget. That team is willing to spend roughly $10 million more on the roster this offseason, and potentially add to the payroll at the trade deadline if the Mets are in contention. Given that the Yankees are all in on trying to win a World Series this year, Neris’ big-game experience in Houston and Philadelphia -- and willingness to pitch in any inning that manager Aaron Boone sees fit -- make him a natural for their roster."
Neris has been mentioned as a fit for the Yankees on multiple occasions this offseason and it wouldn't be surprising to see a deal get done.
