The New York Yankees' lives just got a bit more difficult.

New York has improved its roster this offseason after winning just 82 games in 2023. The Yankees are in a significantly better place after landing Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Marcus Stroman, but the American League East also just got more difficult.

The Baltimore Orioles won 101 games last season but entered the offseason looking to land a top-of-the-rotation hurler. Baltimore recently did just that by landing superstar hurler Corbin Burnes in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Burnes was on the Yankees' radar and at one point seemed like a trade could happen. New York even "inquired" about a possible trade but wasn't able to get a deal done, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

"The Yankees were among the teams that had inquired with the Brewers on Burnes," Sherman said. "But it might just have been that with Juan Soto they reached their tolerance for giving up major assets for a Boras client entering his walk year. That it was the Orioles who were willing to give up such collateral for a likely one-year rental spoke to where they think they are in the contention cycle and their prospect depth."

Landing Burnes would've been the perfect move for the Yankees but New York did deplete its farm system by trading for Soto.

New York still could use another hurler and Burnes would've been a great option but now the Yankees will need to compete with him instead. The Yankees are in a better spot but may need to make one more move this offseason if they want to get to the same level as the Orioles.
