Yankees Could Land Multi-Time All-Star Closer To Bolster Bullpen In Surprise Move
The New York Yankees need to make a major splash this offseason.
New York has been linked to multiple top-tier starting pitchers and offensive free agents but another area where the club could improve is the closer position. The Yankees had the best bullpen in baseball last season but don't currently have a top-tier closer. Because of this, one player who could be a fit for New York in free agency is fireballer Josh Hader, according to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller.
"(Clay Holmes) is a good reliever," Miller said. "Might even be an elite eighth-inning guy. But they also only have him under team control for one more year anyway, so they might as well go get their new closer now while a great one is available. As far as finding the money to get Hader is concerned, that's no problem for the Yankees.
"It's really just a question of whether he's higher on their priority list than several of the other potential $100-plus million free agents in this year's cycle. But if they want him, they can find a way to afford him. And keeping Hader from landing in Texas and making the reigning champs even better might be the added motivation New York needs to make this happen."
Hader would be a very solid pickup for the Yankees. He's just 29 years old and already is a five-time All-Star and three-time Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year. He reportedly is looking for the largest deal in Major League Baseball history for a reliever, but the Yankees could afford it. If New York misses out on some of the top starting pitchers -- like Orix Buffaloes phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto -- maybe the club should turn its focus to Hader.
