Yankees Could Pursue Astros Superstar Next Offseason According To Insider
The New York Yankees are loaded with talent right now but could make more massive splashes next offseason.
New York made arguably the biggest trade of the offseason by acquiring former San Diego Padres superstar Juan Soto. The Yankees' top priority throughout the season will be finding a way to retain him in free agency after the season ends.
The Yankees could end up making multiple major moves along with possibly bringing Soto back. One player who has been mentioned as a possibility is Houston Astros superstar Alex Bregman by the New York Post's Joel Sherman.
"But as opposed to the Winfield-to-Yamamoto timeline, I suspect the Mets and Yankees will be renewing financial fisticuffs more frequently now that Steve Cohen is involved. There already has been speculation that the New York squads will be in a dollar duel next offseason for Juan Soto...
"And one that I think could be particularly interesting involves Alex Bregman...DJ LeMahieu is an excellent defender at third. But he is 35. He has battled injury and offensive decline. The Yankees think they will get a rebound in 2024. But what if they don’t? They don’t really believe in Oswald Peraza as a starting player, and there is no one in the minors even ready to pretend to contend for the position. There also is this: LeMahieu can have a strong year and, with Gleyber Torres due to hit free agency, switch back to second and put the Yanks in the market at third."
This doesn't mean a deal will happen, but it is interesting that Bregman already is being mentioned as a possible option for the Yankees. For now, this is just a hypothetical scenario but if speculation continues to pick up during the season, maybe we could see a move happen next offseason.
