Yankees' New Star Reveals When He'll Be Taking Mound To Start Season
Earlier in the offseason, there was no question who was going to be taking the mound on Opening Day for the New York Yankees.
Reigning AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole was firmly ready to head on the road to face his old team in the Houston Astros on March 28.
However, his elbow injury will prevent that.
The Yankees are still waiting to hear what the results from different tests on his elbow reveal, but they are expecting him to be out for the first couple months of the season, if not more.
That's created questions about who is going to be on the mound for Opening Day.
New York's star offseason signing, Marcus Stroman, revealed that it won't be him according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.
But, the right-hander did give Yankees fans an idea of when they can see him on the bump to start the season.
Kirschner revealed that Stroman will be pitching on Saturday, March 30 against the Astros and will start the home opener April 5 when they take on the Toronto Blue Jays in an important divisional game.
It will be even more important for the rotation to step up in the early part of the year with the uncertainty surrounding Cole.
Stroman was brought in to be a complimentary piece at the top of New York's rotation.
Now, he might have to become their ace.
His first two starts to begin the season are massively important.
On the road against Houston facing a team they could see in the playoffs, and then making sure their divisional race gets off to a strong start when facing the Blue Jays.
The star is coming off an All-Star season with the Chicago Cubs and looked every bit of a National League Cy Young contender before getting hurt.
He'll have to bring that level of game with him for the Yankees.
