Yankees Owner Emphatically Says They're Not Done Trying to Add Players
Entering the offseason, the New York Yankees knew they had to bring some major roster upgrades to this team prior to the start of the upcoming year.
Fans were not happy with how things went down in 2023 and practically demanded ownership and the front office to be aggressive.
They obliged to the tune of shelling out a blockbuster package for Juan Soto, trading with their archrival Boston Red Sox to get Alex Verdugo, and handing star pitcher Marcus Stroman a contract in free agency.
These moves have resulted in the Yankees expected to have their highest payroll in team history as they've blown past the highest luxury tax threshold.
With them still weighing the possibility of adding Blake Snell, handing out a contract to the reigning NL Cy Young winner presents a whole set of issues because of their current financial situation.
Yet, it doesn't seem like New York is done trying to add players this offseason.
"[We] haven’t stopped looking to improve and we never will," owner Hal Steinbrenner emphatically stated according to Greg Joyce of The New York Post.
He believes they have a championship caliber team right now, and based on how they look on paper, they certainly have enough to make a deep postseason run.
Much of that is reliant on health.
Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton have to be on the field for this lineup to work.
Nestor Cortes and Carlos Rodon need to be available and productive to boost this rotation around Gerrit Cole.
That's why the idea of adding Snell continues to be such a tantalizing idea.
The Yankees would have both reigning Cy Young winners at the top of their rotation. After those two would be Stroman, Cortes and Rodon in whatever order the coaching staff sees fit.
That is an absolutely stacked starting unit that should rack up wins and be extremely difficult to beat in the playoffs.
Whether they can get it done will be seen, but if Steinbrenner's comments are to be believed, another blockbuster move could be coming before Opening Day arrives.
