Yankees Star Gerrit Cole Takes Hard Stance On Why New York Struggled In 2023
The New York Yankees currently aren't in the spot many expected them to be in.
New York wide was expected to make the postseason and even fight for a World Series title this year but instead, the Yankees finished 82-80 and missed the playoffs. The Yankees aren't too far away but will have to make some changes this offseason.
Yankees star pitcher Gerrit Cole took a stance on what went wrong this year with the club, as transcribed by the New York Post's Greg Joyce.
“We weren’t able to sustain losing Aaron (Judge) and (Anthony) Rizzo,” Cole said as transcribed by Joyce. “Obviously those are two big chips in (our lineup), and we weren’t able to overcome the rotation challenges (either). Those are obviously big production spots and really a lot of talent, especially Aaron and Rizzo.”
"The Yankees lost Judge on June 3, when he ran into the right-field wall at Dodger Stadium and tore a ligament in his big right toe. A few days before that, Rizzo was in a collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. at first base that derailed his season with post-concussion symptoms that led to a shutdown in August."
New York's roster seemed poised for success this year but injuries dismantled the club. The Yankees will be busy this offseason and likely will make at least a few additions. New York's starting rotation currently is the club's biggest question mark but there are others, as well. The Yankees should use this offseason to continue building up depth and hopefully, next year will be right back in the postseason.
