Yankees Star Reportedly Could Be Traded To Red Sox In Possible Offseason Stunner
The New York Yankees' biggest rivals could be looking to land one of the club's stars this offseason.
There have been rumblings that the Yankees could trade away second baseman Gleyber Torres this offseason and the Boston Red Sox reportedly have shown interest in a possible move, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford.
"According to major league sources, the Red Sox identified Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres as a trade target last season - with (Alex Verdugo) being of interest to New York," Bradford said. "It appears the teams might very well be looping back on that conversation this offseason.
"Torres is viewed by some in the Red Sox' organization as an excellent fit, offering the kind of stability at second base the team didn't possess in 2023. The 26-year-old has one more year of arbitration eligibility, predicted to make just more than $14 million in 2024."
Torres has been impressive for the Yankees, but New York has a surplus of young, less-expensive talent which could pave the way for a trade. The two-time All-Star arguably was the best offensive second baseman in the American League in 2023, but if the Yankees dealt him they could save some money that they then could use in free agency.
New York reportedly has been interested in trading for Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo so maybe a possible swap could be in the works. It's too early to tell if a move is possible, but it's certainly intriguing that the two rivals could actually pull off a major trade.
