Yankees Still Among Top Landing Spots For Superstar According To Insider
Where will Blake Snell land?
The two-time Cy Young Award winner surprisingly still is available. Snell spent the last three seasons with the San Diego Padres and thrived. He led the National League with an impressive 2.25 ERA in 2023 as he won his second Cy Young Award.
The New York Yankees have popped up as a possible option on multiple occasions at this point but still should be considered unlikely because the club would be hit with a massive tax implication.
While this is the case, New York still continues to be mentioned as one of the top possible landing spots, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"If the Yankees get him, they possess the game’s best one-two pitching combo and become World Series favorites, even over the (Los Angeles Dodgers)," Heyman said. "But they also incur an extra $30M in luxury tax. The Yankees like him (Gerrit Cole and Aaron Judge are believed fans), but that tax is a hurdle.
"Meantime, the Giants have room under the threshold, the wherewithal, extra incentive since fans are clamoring for stars and now two rotation injuries (Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn). Best guess: (San Francisco Giants). Other guesses: Yankees, (Los Angeles Angels)."
If money wasn't an issue, Snell would be a perfect addition to New York. He would give the Yankees arguably the best starting pitching duo in baseball. New York's offense seems to be in a good spot and if the rotation could match, the club would be among World Series favorites.
The Yankees still should be seen as an unlikely option because of the tax implication, but Snell in pinstripes is a nice thought at least.
