Miesha Tate defeats Holly Holm for UFC women’s championship

Reigning champion Holly Holm (10–1 MMA, 3–1 UFC) fell to Miesha Tate (17–5 MMA, 4–2 UFC) via submission in the fifth round of Saturday’s UFC 196, giving Tate the UFC women’s bantamweight championship.

Reigning champion Holly Holm (10–1 MMA, 3–1 UFC) fell to Miesha Tate (17–5 MMA, 4–2 UFC) via submission in the fifth round of Saturday’s UFC 196, giving Tate the UFC women’s bantamweight championship.

Tate entered Saturday as the second-ranked woman in the bantamweight division. Her win means that the highly anticipated rematch between Holm and Ronda Rousey will not be with the bantamweight title belt on the line.

Holm shocked the world last November by defeating Rousey with a knockout kick at UFC 193 to take home the UFC women’s bantamweight belt. She was aiming for the ninth title defense in UFC women’s history.
