Jockey Kent Desormeaux and favorite Big Brown started from the 20th position in the 20-horse field.
Big Brown was trying to become the first horse since the filly Regret in 1915 to win the Kentucky Derby off just three career starts
Halfway down the stretch to the finish Big Brown pulled away from Eight Belles (right) and the other 19 horses to become the first horse to win from the 20th post position since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929.
Big Brown finished ahead of Eight Belles (right) at the finish line.
Big Brown finished with a winning time of 2:01.82. His four career wins have come by a combined 33 3/4 lengths.
Desormeaux and Big Brown finished 4 3/4 lengths ahead of second-place Eight Belles.
Hall of Famer Desormeaux rode his way into a fourth-place tie on the all-time list with his fourth career Derby win and the first since 2000.
