Germany-Spain Through the Years
Euro 2008 | Germany vs. Spain
Sunday's Euro 2008 final between Germany and Spain is the 20th meeting between the international soccer giants but the first in a major final. In fact, it's the first time the two countries have met in a single-match knockout game in the World Cup or the European Championships. Here's a look at some of the memorable ties between Die Nationalelf and La Furia Roja over the years.
International Friendly (2000) | Germany 4, Spain 1
The Germans rebounded from their nightmarish Euro 2000 campaign with an emphatic victory over Spain in Rudi Völler's debut as national team coach. Mehmet Scholl and Alexander Zickler tallied two goals apiece to help Germany stake a commanding 4-0 lead before Raul's cosmetic strike. Current German captain Michael Ballack (right) made his ninth international appearance in the rout.
1994 World Cup | Spain 1, Germany 1
The Group C co-favorites played to a 1-1 draw at Chicago's Soldier Field, with Spain's Ion Andoni Goikoetxea striking early and Germany's Jürgen Klinsmann equalizing during the second half.
Euro 1988 | West Germany 2, Spain 0
A double from Rudi Völler (right) helped West Germany clinch a first-place finish in Group A, while eliminating Spain from a major international tournament for the third time in 12 years.
Euro 1984 | Spain 1, West Germany 0
Antonio Maceda's last-minute winner put Spain through to the semifinals -- and eliminated the defending European champions from the group stage.
1982 World Cup | West Germany 2, Spain 1
Playing before a hysterical home crowd at the hallowed Bernabéu, the Germans eliminated the tournament hosts from the World Cup thanks to second-half goals from Klaus Fischer and Pierre Littbarski.
Euro 1976 qualifying | West Germany 3, Spain 1 (on aggregate)
The Germans played the Spanish to a 1-1 draw at Vicente Calderón Stadium in the first match of a two-legged quarterfinal. But an early goal from Uli Hoeness (pictured) sparked the reigning world champions to a 2-0 victory in the second leg at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, advancing West Germeny through to the semifinals.
1966 World Cup | West Germany 2, Spain 1
The Germans eliminated Spain from the tournament with a narrow victory in the final group stage game, securing the result with an 84th-minute goal from Uwe Seeler (pictured, against England). But Germany's first goal -- a left-footed strike from Lothar Emmerich from an impossible angle -- remains one of the most famous moments in the team's history.
