Miracle On Ice

Images from Sports Illustrated's new book, <i>Slide Show: How The Picture Tells Its Story, Secrets And Surprises From SI's Classic Photos</i> ... <br><br>Deep into the Cold War era, the top-ranked Soviets met the United States in what was sure to be an easy red-white-and-blue bashing. What happened was quickly dubbed the "Miracle On Ice" as the U.S. defeated Russia in the 1980 Olympic semifinals.

An earthquake that struck just before game 3 halted the Series between San Francisco and Oakland for 10 days. This image also was used in a Cal Ripken Jr. commemorative issue years later.

Brandi Chastain Celebrates

Nike women's sports bras sales would skyrocket after this picture appeared on the cover of SI with Brandi Chastain celebrating after making the winning penalty kick in the 1999 World Cup. It was instant redemption for the defender, who scored on her own team accidentally on a pass-back gone wrong earlier in the game.
