San Francisco's Rick Barry scores in 57 points in the Warriors' 141-137 setback against New York at Madison Square Garden. Barry's 57 points were the second-highest total ever scored by a rookie in an NBA game (Wilt Chamberlain twice scored 58 for Philadelphia in 1960).

Pete Maravich
The Utah Jazz retire Pete Maravich's No. 7 jersey. Pistol Pete averaged 24.2 ppg in 10 NBA seasons, ending in 1979-80.
Roger Maris
After a two-year battle with lymphatic cancer, Roger Maris (pictured here with Mickey Mantle) dies in a Houston hospital at 51. Former Yankees teammates Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, John Blanchard, Bill Skowron and Bob Allison serve as pall bearers along with Whitey Herzog.

Phoenix's Mike Gartner becomes the fifth player in NHL history to score 700 career goals. The other 700 goal scorers were Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito and Marcel Dionne.
