Willie Mays
Joining Yankee legend Babe Ruth, Willie Mays became the second major leaguer to hit 600 home runs when he went yard on Padres hurler Mike Corkins in the Giants' 4-2 victory on Sept. 22, 1969.
Billy Martin
Billy Martin's right arm is broken by pitcher Ed Whitson during a scuffle at a hotel bar.
Fernando Valenzuela
Dodger hurler Fernando Valenzuela (20-10) two-hits Houston en route to a 9-2 victory at the Astrodome. The 25-year old southpaw becomes the first Mexican to win 20 games in the major leagues.
NFL Strike
The NFL players begin a 24-day strike. The games that were scheduled for the third week of the season were canceled, but the games for weeks 4-6 were played with replacement players.
Janet Evans
Janet Evans sets the female world record in the 400m freestyle (4:03.85).
Don Shula
Don Shula records his 300th career victory with Miami's 16-13 win over Green Bay.
Nolan Ryan
Nolan Ryan, who had announced his plans to retire at end of the season, leaves the game after facing just three Mariners hitters before injuring his right elbow. It would mark the final outing of the legend's career.
Jose Lima
At Cinergy Field, Astros' Jose Lima sets an National League record by giving up his 47th home run of the season passing the 1956 mark of Robin Roberts. Bert Blyleven holds the major league mark serving up 50 gopher balls as a Twin in 1986.
Pete Rose
In last game ever played at Cinergy Field, the Phillies complete a three-game sweep defeating the Reds, 4-3, in front of many of the team's former superstars except for the banished Pete Rose. The all-time hit leader, however, is not forgotten as Tom Browning, paints Rose's uniform number 14 on the pitcher's mound after the game with red spray paint and, as home plate is dug up and to be delivered next door to Great American Ball Park, the crowd begins to chant, "Pete, Pete".
