Don Shula, coach of the Miami Dolphins, became the first NFL head coach to win 100 regular season games in 10 seasons.

Dan Issel

In a 118-111 loss at New Jersey, Denver center Dan Issel scores his 20,000th career point, becoming the 12th man in pro basketball history to reach that plateau.

Steve Howe

After being banned from baseball for life in June, New York Yankee pitcher Steve Howe is reinstated into baseball for the eighth time.

Albert Pujols

One year after playing Class-A ball, Albert Pujols (pictured here with wife, Deidre) is named the National League Rookie of the Year. The Cardinal set NL rookie marks for RBIs (130), total bases (360) and extra base hits (88) and fell one home run shy of tying the NL rookie record of 38 established by Frank Robinson in 1956 as a member of the Reds.

Ryan Braun

In the closest election since the current method was initiated in 1980, the Baseball Writers Association of America select Ryan Braun as the Rookie of the Year. The Brewers' third baseman edges Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who was listed first on more than half the BWAA ballots.
