Athletes and Their WAGs: '80s Edition

Mark Gastineau and Brigitte Nielsen

Mark Gastineau, a key cog in the Jets' "New York Sack Exchange" defense of the '80s, started dating Nielsen in early 1988 after her divorce from Sylvester Stallone. Midway through the '88 season, the Jets linebacker announced that he was retiring to take care of Nielsen, whom he feared had uterine cancer. He later admitted the real reason for his retirement was out of fear that he'd fail another steroid test. The couple had a son, Killian, in 1989, but the relationship ended soon after.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Cheryl Pistono

Fresh off a divorce, the NBA's all-time leader in points dated Cheryl Pistono in 1979. The duo, seen here in a 1980 SI photo shoot, had a brief courtship that resulted in the birth of Jabbar's second son, Amir.

Jerry and Jackie Rice

The couple were all smiles when Rice received the 1987 Most Valuable Player Award. They divorced in 2007 after 20 years of marriage.

Carol Alt was on top of the modeling world when she met Ron Greschner, a defenseman on the New York Rangers. The couple wed in 1983 and were married for 13 years before divorcing. Alt has remained loyal to her hockey roots and is currently dating former Senator and Islander Alexei Yashin.

They married in 1985 and have four children, including 21-year-old Nate, a quarterback at Notre Dame, and 19-year old Nick, a redshirt freshman at Washington.

John McEnroe and Tatum O'Neal

Known for his prickly demeanor on the court, John McEnroe captured the heart of actress Tatum O'Neal and the couple wed in the summer of 1986. The marriage lasted eight years; they have three children.

Diego and Claudia Maradona

Maradona, one of the greatest soccer players of all time, married his longtime girlfriend, Claudia, in 1989. The two already had two children at the time of the marriage. The couple divorced 15 years later but remain close.
