2011 Duel in the Pool
Dec. 16-17 2011, USA Swimming hosted it's fifth Duel in the Pool swim meet between the U.S. and Europe. The 2011 event was held in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, located on Georgia Tech's campus in Atlanta, Ga. The swimming portions of the 1996 Olympics were also held at this pool.
U.S. Women 4x100 Medley Relay
The U.S. women kicked off the meet by swimming a short course meters world record in the 4x100 medley relay. Natalie Coughlin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Missy Franklin swam for a combined time of 3:45.56, breaking the old record by almost two and a half seconds.
Ryan Lochte
Ryan Lochte churns through the water during the 100m backstroke. Lochte took third in this event, and won the 200m individual medley, the 400m individual medley and the 200m backstroke.
Ricky Berens
Ricky Berens won the 100m and 200m freestyles for the U.S. men, and contributed to the gold medal-winning 4x100m freestyle relay.
Missy Franklin
Missy Franklin topped the podium in the 200m backstroke and 200m freestyle, and grabbed bronze in the 100m backstroke. Franklin also swam a leg in both the 4x100m medley and 4x100m freestyle relays, which won gold and silver respectively.
Rebecca Soni
Breaststroke specialist Rebecca Soni took gold and silver in the 200m and 100m breaststroke, respectively. Soni also swam the breaststroke leg on the world record-breaking 4x100m medley relay.
Brenden Hansen
Brenden Hansen swept both of the men's breaststroke events, and swam the breaststroke leg on the men's 4x100m medley relay, which also won gold.
Natalie Coughlin
All-around swimmer Natalie Coughlin took gold in the 100m butterfly, silver in the 100m backstroke, bronze in the 100m freestyle and sixth in the 50m freestyle. Coughlin also swam on both relays and set an American record for the 100m backstroke in the leadoff leg of the world record-breaking 4x100m medley relay.
Matt Grevers
Matt Grevers won the 100m butterfly and the 100m backstroke, finished second in the 200m backstroke and third in the 50m freestyle. Grevers also swam on both relays, which won gold medals.
Chloe Sutton
Distance swimmer Chloe Sutton won the 400m freestyle over fellow American Katie Hoff (2nd) and Denmark's Lotte Friis (3rd). Sutton grabbed silver in the 800m freestyle, behind Friis.
Michael Klueh
Michael Klueh topped an all-American podium in the 400m freestyle with fellow Americans Conor Dwyer (2nd) and Matt McLean (3rd). Klueh won the silver in the 800m freestyle.
Lotte Friis
Denmark's Lotte Friis reacts after she wins the 800m freestyle in a time just .24 away from the world record. The U.S.'s Chloe Sutton finished second.
Jessica Hardy
Jessica Hardy won the 100m breaststroke, and finished fourth and fifth in the 100m and 50m freestyles, respectively. Hardy also swam in the winning 4x100 freestyle relay.
Kathleen Hersey
Kathleen Hersey swam to first place and an American record in the 200m butterfly, beating Elaine Breeden, former holder of the American record. Hersey also finished fourth in the 400m individual medley.
Davis Tarwater
Davis Tarwater grabbed an American record in the 200m butterfly as well, and finished second to Hungarian sensation Laszlo Cseh.
Nick Brunelli
Nick Brunelli fist-pumps after he won the 50m freestyle by just .01, the slimmest of margins. Brunelli finished fourth in the 100m freestyle, and also swam a leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay, which won the gold.
Caitlin Leverenz
Caitlin Leverenz won the 200m individual medley with a time just .31 off Julia Smit's American and world record. Leverenz won the silver in the 400m individual medley.
European 4x100 freestyle relay
The European 4x100 freestyle relay, with swimmers Jeanette Ottesen, Francesca Halsall, Allaksandra herasimenia and Ranomi Kromowidjojo swam a world record time, but it didn't count because the swimmers all came from different European countries.
