Top 10 Boston-New York Games or Series
1916 World Series
Only Red Sox-Dodgers Series in history. Ernie Shore (two wins) and Babe Ruth (0.64 ERA) lead a Boston pitching staff that records a 1.47 ERA in a four games to one series victory.
1972 Stanley Cup Finals
Four games decided by one goal. Second Stanley Cup for the Bobby Orr-Phil Esposito Bruins in three years. Orr gets goal and assist in 3-0 Game 6 win as Bruins goalie Gerry Cheevers contributes several brilliant saves. Last Bruins Stanley Cup for 39 years.
1969 NBA Eastern Conference Finals
Last hurrah for Bill Russell's Celtics who hold off the up-and-coming Knicks with one-point wins in both Game 4 and the clinching Game 6. Celtics go on to beat the L.A. Lakers in the NBA Finals for Russell's 11th championship in 13 years.
1973 NBA Eastern Finals
Dramatic series with Celtics battling back from 3-1 deficit only to lose their first Game 7 at the Boston Garden as an injured John Havlicek (separated shoulder) can't play at full strength. Knicks go on to beat the Lakers for the NBA crown, their second championship in four years. Knicks have yet to win another NBA title.
Super Bowl XLVI (2012)
Wes Welker couldn't haul in a pass at the 20-yard line with four minutes left, forcing a punt that gave the Giants another chance trailing 17-15. Eli Manning threw a spot-on 38-yard pass down the sideline to Mario Manningham, fitting the ball perfectly between two defensive backs barreling down on the receiver. New England pulled up and allowed Ahmad Bradshaw to run the final six yards of the drive for a TD with 57 seconds left. The Patriots got only as far as midfield with five seconds left and Brady threw a desperation pass into the end zone, where the ball was batted around in a scrum before falling incomplete.
2003 ALCS
Trailing Boston 5-2 in eighth inning of Game 7, Yankees tie the game 5-5 off a tiring Pedro Martinez, then win the AL pennant on Aaron Boone's home run in the 11th inning. Red Sox manager Grady Little is vilified for not removing Martinez in the 8th and is later fired.
2004 ALCS
Boston sets baseball history by becoming the first team to rally from a 3-0 deficit in games. Red Sox come from behind to win Games 4 and 5 in extra innings at Fenway Park, then dominate the Yankees in Games 6 and 7 at Yankee Stadium. Red Sox later sweep the St. Louis Cardinals for first world championship in 86 years.
1986 World Series
One out from a Series-ending defeat in Game 6, Mets score three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to stay alive. Tying run scores on Bob Stanley's wild pitch and the winning run scores on Bill Buckner's error at first base. In Game 7, Mets spot Boston a 3-0 lead before powering to an 8-5 victory.
1912 World Series
The greatest World Series of baseball's first 20 years with five games decided by two runs or fewer and a Game 2 6-6 tie. Giants take 2-1 lead in top of the 10th inning of Game 8 and with Christy Mathewson on the mound, the Red Sox looked dead. But a muffed outfield fly by Fred Snodgrass and a foul fly that was allowed to drop between home and first allow the Red Sox to rally for a 3-2 win. Pitcher Smokey Joe Wood picks up his third win of the Series in relief one day after being shelled in Game 7.
Super Bowl XLII (2008)
Pats' bid for an unbeaten season falls short as Eli Manning hits Plaxico Burris with a 13-yard TD pass in the final minute. The TD was set up by a spectacular 32-yard Manning to David Tyree pass that Tyree catches with one hand and his helmet. The Patriots, who had averaged nearly 37 points per season, are held to their lowest output of the season.
