Sixth in the Derby, Oxbow held on to beat Itsmyluckyday by 1 3/4 lengths. Mylute was third, followed by Orb, Goldencents, departing, Will Take Charge, Govenor Charlie and Titletown Five.

Gary Stevens, who came out retirement this year, won the Preakness for the third time.

"It's so special," Stevens said. "Wayne, he supported me. Put me on my first Triple Crown winner. A lot of people were trying to get me off. He was the first guy to call me up and said `I'm going to have a colt for you. His name is Oxbow.' "

Stevens and Oxbow stretched the Triple Crown drought to 36 years. The last horse to win all three races was Affirmed in 1978.

"To win a classic at 50 years old after seven years retirement, it doesn't get any better than this," said Stevens. "It's even more special winning it for Wayne Lukas and his team."

Stevens also won the 1997 Preakness -- on Silver Charm.

Stevens retired in 2005 because of knee problems.

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lucas celebrated his 14th win in a Triple Crown race.

The last time a Lucas horse took a Triple Crown race was in the 2000 Belmont, which Commendable won.
