Report: Carmelo done in Denver

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- A divorce between Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets appears to be imminent. According to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Anthony's agents, William "Worldwide" Wesley and Leon Rose of CAA, handed the Nuggets a short list of teams that the star forward would be interested in joining.

On Sunday, Anthony told Josh Kroenke, the heir apparent of owner Stan Kroenke, that he wants out of Denver, and the team seems to have given up on trying to get to sign the three-year, $65 million extension they originally offered. Now it's just a matter of when and where Carmelo will go.

Unlike many other NBA owners, Josh Kroenke seems willing to fight, telling CAA that trying to dictate the terms will result in Carmelo not going anywhere. The Nuggets also made it clear that, if they give up Anthony, they want young talent and draft picks in return. Their best bets: the Nets or Clippers, who both have the assets amenable to Denver and the locations suitable for Carmelo and his wife.

According to Wojnarowski, the other possible candidates include Golden State, Houston and Charlotte, since Anthony has a shoe deal with Jordan Brand and the Bobcats could offer a salary-dump proposal.

With Denver's front office in flux -- GM Mark Warkentien was fired and will soon be replaced by Masai Ujiri -- sources told Wojnarowski that the Nuggets won't be able to uphold Kroenke's fight against CAA. In short, the end is near for the Anthony era in Denver.
