Longtime Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss died Monday morning after a long bout with cancer. He was 80. Buss, a 2010 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, guided the Lakers to 10 NBA championships and 16 Finals appearances, assembling the multiple eras of success from the 1980s Showtime dynasty to success in the 2000s with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. Buss was also beloved by his players and spent lavishly on his team to ensure its success. Picture: Buss smiles while watching the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks in August 2005. In addition to owning the Lakers, Buss once owned the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, the Los Angeles Strings of World Team Tennis, the Los Angeles Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer League and the Sparks.

Stars like Kareem Adbul-Jabbar would rebound the ball and feed it to Magic Johnson to start the fast break and find scorers like James Worthy for a layup or a dunk.

Buss showed great faith in Bryant when he made a draft-day trade for the 17-year-old, the first guard to be drafted out of high school. The move paid handsomely for Buss as Bryant helped revitalize the Lakers after a series of down years in the 1990s.
