Spurs' Tracy McGrady to consider retirement following 2013 Finals

Seven-time All-Star Tracy McGrady is considering retirement after the conclusion of the 2013 Finals between San Antonio and Miami.

Yahoo! Sports reports that the veteran Spurs forward said Tuesday that retirement is "a possibility" and that he didn't expect to sign with San Antonio after spending the opening portion of the 2012-13 season playing in the Chinese Basketball Association.

“I shut it down for two months and I was shocked when I got a phone call from (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich),” McGrady said. “I was shocked. I got out of shape and I was like, ‘You want me to come down now?’ So when I went up to visit him, he told me he wanted me to be a part of his team. I just started getting back in shape and here I am.”

“We’ll see after this season how I feel,” McGrady said. “If this team was the last team standing, who knows how I would feel about playing basketball again? To be on a championship team and to win a championship … if that was to happen, I don’t see any other reason for me to come back. I feel that I got a lot of game left, but I can’t come back and settle.”

McGrady, 34, signed with the Spurs in April following Popovich's decision to release Stephen Jackson just days before the start of the playoffs. He's seen only spot minutes, has yet to score in four postseason appearances and isn't expected to play a meaningful role against the Heat. On the bright side, he did advance out of the first round of the playoffs for the first time during his 16-year NBA career.

The two-time scoring champion averaged a career-best 32.1 points with the 2002-03 Magic at age 23, but back, shoulder and knee injuries eventually robbed him of much of his athleticism and his numbers fell off a cliff once he hit 30.

McGrady received All-NBA First, Second or Third Team recognition seven times and has earned more than $162 million in salary since being selected with the No. 9 pick in the 1997 draft. He holds averages of 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists over a career that included stops with the Raptors, Magic, Rockets, Knicks, Pistons, Hawks and Spurs.

San Antonio is McGrady's fourth NBA team since 2009. He went unsigned last fall after averaging 5.3 points and 3 rebounds in Atlanta during the 2011-12 season and eventually opted to play for the Qindgdao Eagles in China.

Two other NBA stars -- Grant Hill and Jason Kidd -- recently announced their plans to retire.
