Yes, they actually went through with it.
The Heat and Nets debuted their "nickname jerseys" during Brooklyn's 104-95 double overtime victory at the Barclays Center on Friday.
Although Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers, Greg Oden, Deron Williams and Brook Lopez all missed out on the fun due to various injuries, all 20 players that saw court time donned nicknames, rather than their last names, on the back of their jerseys.
All the easily recognizable nicknames for both teams were present: LeBron James wore "King James," Ray Allen wore "J. Shuttlesworth" (a reference to his famous Jesus Shuttlesworth character in the movie He Got Game), Chris Andersen wore "Birdman," Kevin Garnett wore "Big Ticket," Paul Pierce wore "Truth," and Jason Terry wore "Jet."

After months of teasing and a few leaked images, both teams unveiled their full list of “nickname jerseys” this week (see below).
Check out the following gallery of nickname jersey images from before and during the game, including custom uniforms for ESPN broadcasters Mike Breen ("Gray Mamba") and Jeff Van Gundy ("Notorious JVG").

The Heat plan to wear the nickname jerseys two more times: Jan. 21 against the Celtics and April 8 against the Nets.
Brooklyn improved to 15-21 with their fifth straight win. Miami dropped to 27-10 with their second straight loss.
