Lamar Odom is attempting a comeback ... overseas.
The former NBA star has agreed to sign a two-month contract with Spanish team Baskonia, according to the club. Odom hasn't played professional basketball since completing the 2012-13 season with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Odom, 34, and the club have been in talks for some time. The new deal also includes an option to extend the contract until the end of Baskonia's season, according to The Associated Press. The 6-foot-10 forward is expected to travel to Spain this week and possibly make his debut on Saturday.
NBA trade deadline buzz: Latest rumors, reports around the league
Baskonia is in ninth place in the 18-team Spanish League and last in its Euroleague group. The club has featured several well-known NBA players over the years, including Jose Calderon, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and Tiago Splitter. The current roster includes Andres Nocioni, who played nine years in the NBA for the Bulls, Kings and 76ers.
Odom's decision to play in Spain comes after the two-time champion reportedly tried to catch on with the Clippers earlier this season, working out for new coach Doc Rivers and the team's front office. But the deal ultimately fell through, and Los Angeles decided to bring in other veterans, including Stephen Jackson (who has since been waived), Sasha Vujacic (who isn't expected to sign a second 10-day contract) and Hedo Turkoglu.
Odom, the 2010-11 Sixth Man Award winner, had his worst season as a pro in his most recent NBA stint, averaging a career-low four points and 5.9 rebounds in 19.7 minutes per game with the Clippers in '12-13.
He's also had extensive off-the-court problems. As The Point Forward noted earlier, Odom was arrested in August on DUI charges for allegedly weaving in and out of traffic in a white Mercedes. After refusing to take chemical tests, he was released on bail shortly after the arrest. He pleaded no contest in December, avoiding jail time but being sentenced to three years of probation and three months of alcohol abuse treatment.
If Odom does return to the NBA, he will almost certainly face a suspension for his “no contest” plea. Then-Mavericks forward Devin Ebanks and Nets coach Jason Kidd were both suspended two games for pleading no contest to DUI charges in recent months.
Odom also recently went through a messy divorce with reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, which was finalized in December.
