Michigan State sophomore guard Gary Harris declared for the NBA draft on Monday.
"This was not an easy decision," Harris said in a statement. "Just like last season, I had to make a tough decision. There hasn't been a single day where I regretted my decision to return for my sophomore season. It was the right decision for me and I'm better prepared for a successful NBA career because of it. On top of that, I have another season of memories from being around this year's team. But now it's time to chase my lifelong dream of playing in the NBA."
Harris, 19, averaged 16.7 points, four rebounds and 2.7 assists in 32.3 minutes for the Spartans this season, taking home 2014 All-Big Ten honors. He scored in double figures in three of Michigan State's four NCAA tournament games, including a 22-point outing in an Elite Eight loss to UConn. As a freshman, Harris was selected to the All-Big Ten second team and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix placed Harris at No. 10 on his latest big board.
When healthy, Harris is a terrific two-way player. He's strong off the dribble, can hit the mid-range shot and finishes at the rim. Defensively, Harris makes up for a (slight) lack of size with aggression and speed. The primary concern continues to be his three-point shot. He's a solid 4-of-11 from deep through two tournament games but has made just 35.2 percent for the season, down from 41.1 last year. The good news is his form isn't bad and scouts can see it developing over time.
