Former Hawks big man Gustavo Ayon has spurned the NBA for an opportunity to play for Real Madrid, according to a report from Solobasket.
The 29-year-old missed half of last season after being shut down in February because of shoulder surgery. He returned for the FIBA World Cup and played strong in defeat in Mexico's losing effort to Team USA.
He had been receiving offers from multiple teams, including the Spurs, but those were only for veteran minimum deals. Last season for the Hawks, Ayon averaged 4.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.
