On the eve of Team USA's FIBA World Cup final vs. Serbia, the United States' Derrick Rose gave himself an "A" for his overall performance in the tournament, according to a report Saturday night from K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune.
Rose, who turns 26 years old next month, battled back from knee surgeries over the past several years that caused him to miss virtually all of the past two seasons. His showing in the FIBA tournament has been the most consistent basketball he's played to date since going down with a season ending injury in the 2011-12 season.
The NBA's youngest MVP ever has averaged just 5.4 points per game on 27.3 shooting in the tournament heading into Sunday's final, and he's hit just one of his 17 attempts from beyond the arc.
Still, Rose grades his performance as an "A" and talked more about his logic with Johnson:
"I would give it an A in my mind. Just coming off of what I had to go through and actually getting a spot on the USA team after missing two years of basketball? Like, c’mon man. It shows that I at least worked somewhere and hard work pays off. If anything, it gives me more confidence to head into the regular season."
