Los Angeles Clippers forward Glen Davis sustained a right groin strain in practice Thursday and is likely out until the team's season opener on Oct. 30, head coach Doc Rivers said.

Rivers didn't give an exact timeline, but Davis is expected to miss two weeks. His injury occurred exactly two weeks before the season opener.

"We're going to take our time with that," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "I don't give a time frame, but no time soon ... I think it will be close [to the season opener]. I think he'll be back playing by then, but I don't know if he'll be in basketball shape to play."

Davis, an eighth-year pro out of LSU, averaged 4.2 points and three rebounds in 23 games. He signed with the Clippers in February after agreeing to a contract buyout with the Orlando Magic and then re-signed with Los Angeles in the offseason after his contract expired.

The Clippers' addition of Davis meant a reunion between he and Rivers. Davis played for the Boston Celtics from 2007-11 while Rivers was the team's coach. The two won the NBA championship together in 2008 and made another trip to the NBA Finals in 2010.

Davis left for the Magic in 2011. His best statistical season came in 2012-13 when he averaged 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for Orlando.

The Clippers open the regular season at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder, who eliminated Los Angeles from the playoffs last season in the Western Conference semifinals.
