Kicks and Colors spotlights the variety of colorways—and the stories that go with—that brands unveil in key basketball sneakers.

Brand: Nike

Sneaker: Kobe X

Signature athlete: Kobe Bryant

Colorway: Overcome

Story: Injuries have played a major part in Kobe Bryant’s last few years with the Los Angeles Lakers. The initial Kobe X colorway, 5 AM, played off the idea that Kobe starts his workouts early. The Overcome colorway is meant to remind folks that his shoulder rehabilitation ahead of the 2015 season was met with the same intensity. As Kobe has started taking shots again on the court, the new emerald glow, court purple and reflect silver Kobe X (not the elite) puts a patchwork of design together. The shoe releases Aug. 27.
