If the Cleveland Cavaliers remain in first place on Jan. 31, newly appointed head coach Tyronn Lue would be eligible to coach the All-Star Game on Feb. 14 in Toronto, an NBA spokesperson tells Steve Aschburner of NBA.com.

NBA rules state that the All-Star coaches are taken from the teams with the best record in each conference by a cut-off date. This season’s cut-off date in Jan. 31.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has returned to the sidelines but the NBA is considering Luke Walton as the West team head coach after he filled in for Kerr and led the team to the NBA’s best record. The Warriors’ 39–4 mark goes on Kerr’s coaching record despite Walton filling in as head coach.

Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff may get second dibs on the All-Star Game, if Kerr and Walton choose not to coach in back-to-back All-Star Games. The Golden State staff served as the West’s coaches at last year's All-Star Game in New York.
