Minnesota fired Sam Mitchell earlier this month after he led the team to a 29–53 record this season. Mitchell was serving as interim head coach after the death of Flip Saunders.
Thibodeau, widely hailed for his defensive acumen, served as head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 2010 to ’15, compiling a .647 winning percentage. He led Chicago to the playoffs in each of his five seasons.
Van Gundy has not coached since 2007, when he was with the Houston Rockets. Across 11 seasons with the Knicks and Rockets, Van Gundy has a record of 430–318 over his career, and a 44–44 record in the playoffs.
