Zachary Simmons, the cousin of No. 1 pick Ben Simmons, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in New Jersey early on Saturday morning. He was 21.
According to authorities, Zachary Simmons was walking down the street in Hoboken, N.J. around 4:30 a.m. ET when he was hit by a black SUV. Simmons’s mother said he was out for a friend’s birthday, just one day after celebrating with his cousin after the draft.
Police are still looking for the car that struck him.
Ben Simmons confirmed the news with a series of tweets on Saturday.
“I’m glad I could share this moment in my life with you,” Simmons wrote. “Rest in peace Cuzzo.”
Simmons was taken No. 1 overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in Thursday’s NBA draft.
