Russell Westbrook subtly dissed Kevin Durant on Instagram with cupcake photo
On the Fourth of July of this year, the day Kevin Durant announced he would be leaving the Thunder for the Warriors, Russell Westbrook posted a photo of some festive cupcakes.
"HAPPY 4th YALL," Westbrook wrote in the seemingly unassuming caption.
But in a profile for The Crossover, SI's Lee Jenkins revealed the photo was actually a subtle jab at Westbrook's former teammate.
"Westbrook didn’t disparage Durant. He didn’t judge him. All he did was take a picture. When Kendrick Perkins played center for the Thunder, he called teammates 'cupcake' if he thought they were acting a little soft. Westbrook and Durant adopted the term in jest. Westbrook posted a bittersweet pic on Instagram: three plates of cupcakes topped by red and blue stars and sprinkles."
Westbrook and Durant were teammates on the Thunder beginning in 2008. They weren't close friends, but Westbrook had played his entire eight year career alongside Durant.
Westbrook has made several comments about Durant's departure, including recently saying it was "cute" that Durant implied Thunder players are selfish.
