Top overall draft pick Zion Williamson will not be ready to play at the start of the regular season due to a knee injury, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports

The Pelicans announced Thursday that Williamson would not play in Friday’s preseason finale against the Knicks due to “right knee soreness.”

The injury is not believed to be severe but Williamson “is expected to miss a period of weeks to start the regular season,” Wojnarowski reports.

New Orleans has been cautious with the health of its new franchise player. Williamson suffered a minor knee bruise in his Las Vegas Summer League debut and was subsequently shut down for the rest of the competition.

Williamson also injured his right knee in February when his foot ripped through his shoe during a Duke-North Carolina game. That injury caused him to miss six games.
