Anthony Edwards Cited for Assault After Outburst Injures Two People
Denver police reportedly have cited Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards for two cases of third-degree assault, according to a Wednesday report from Jake Shapiro of Denver Sports.
The citations stem from an incident which took place in the immediate aftermath of Minnesota’s elimination loss against the Nuggets in Game 5 on Tuesday.
After Edwards missed a potential game-tying three-point attempt which saw the Timberwolves eliminated from the playoffs in the first round, he could be seen sprinting to the locker room.
Per the report, the Denver Police Department’s Jay Casillas indicated that Edwards picked up a folding chair and swung it, striking two female employees. The employees reportedly both sustained non-serious injuries and asked to press charges against the 21-year-old.
Under Colorado law, Edwards could face up to 18 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
The report indicates Denver police delayed Minnesota’s team bus after the game in order to issue a citation to Edwards.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Timberwolves released a statement regarding the incident.
“We are aware of the alleged incident regarding Anthony Edwards following Game 5 in Denver and are in the process of gathering more information. We have no further comment at this moment,” wrote the organization.
Edwards was the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA draft out of Georgia. In 2023, he made his first All-Star appearance and averaged a career-high 24.6 points per game. He scored 29 points in Tuesday’s elimination loss against the Nuggets.
