The San Antonio Spurs selected French prospect Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in 2023 NBA draft Thursday night.

The 19-year-old talent is widely considered to be the best draft prospect to enter the league since LeBron James was tabbed No. 1 by Cleveland back in 2003.

This is the third time that the Spurs have been owned the top overall pick. The previous two times, the club selected Hall of Fame big men David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997).

Playing for Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 in France’s top league this past season, the phenom averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.0 blocks per game. Boulogne-Levallois reached the LNB championship series but was swept in the best-of-five set by Monaco.

The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama is expected to step right into the starting lineup and immediately improve a San Antonio roster that went 22-60 in 2022-23. The Spurs, who have won five championships in their history, are hoping Wembanyama can help them end a four-year playoff drought.
