Cavaliers Land Max Strus Via Sign-and-Trade With Heat, Spurs

The sharpshooting guard is the second Heat player to leave the franchise in free agency.

Free agent guard Max Strus has agreed to a four-year, $63 million contract with the Cavaliers as part of a three-team sign-and-trade with the Heat, Cavaliers and Spurs, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Cleveland will send Cedi Osman, Lamar Stevens and second-round pick to the Spurs, and will send a second-round pick to the Heat in exchange for Strus.

Strus has been a key member of the Miami rotation over the last couple of seasons, which culminated with his role in helping the Heat reach the NBA Finals last month. Strus averaged a career-high 11.5 points per game, emerging as the latest developmental success story for Erik Spoelstra and the Heat.

Strus’s development, beginning as an undrafted free agent to key NBA rotation player, has now landed him a life-changing pay day. For the second consecutive season, Strus started every postseason game for the Heat. The DePaul product has shot 37.1% from three in his career, and checks off a key offseason priority for Cleveland to add more perimeter shooting to its rotation.

It’s been a busy start of free agency for the Cavaliers, who in addition to the Strus deal struck an agreement with Georges Niang and re-signed Caris LeVert, who will remain in Cleveland on a two-year contract.

As for Miami, Strus is the second starter in the backcourt to leave in free agency, joining Gabe Vincent, who inked a three-year deal with the Lakers on Friday night.
