NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Finalizing Contract Extension, per Report

The new pact will keep him in his role through 2030.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is finalizing a contract extension with the league’s Board of Governors that will keep him in his post through the rest of the decade, according to a report Saturday from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The 61-year-old Silver is nearing his 10th anniversary as the leader of the NBA, and appears poised to remain in the role for at least six more years.

Silver, who is one of the most popular commissioners in American professional sports, will now be tasked with securing the league’s next media rights deal, as well as potential expansion before his next contract is up.

His extension comes on the heels of ushering a new collective bargaining agreement between league governors and the NBA Players Association through the 2029 season. A significant piece of the CBA included a revamped salary cap system that gives small and mid-market teams a better chance to compete for championships, which has landed him plenty of praise in the process.

Silver has spent nearly two decades in significant leadership roles within the NBA. Most notably, he served as the deputy commissioner of the league under former commissioner David Stern for eight years before taking over for him formally as the head of the NBA in 2014.
