Marc Gasol Retires From Basketball After 13 NBA Seasons
One of the NBA's most consistent big men of the 2010s is calling it a career.
Former Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers center Marc Gasol is retiring, he announced early Tuesday morning.
Gasol, 39, posted a video to social media in which he receives messages from players and coaches in North America and Europe.
The video ends with the phrases "Ara què?" in Catalan and "What's next?" in English.
Gasol has not played in the NBA since 2021, when he played 52 games for the Lakers. Since then, he has played for Bàsquet Girona, the team in Spain's top league of which he serves as president.
A mainstay of the Grizzlies' "Grit-N-Grind" era, Gasol spent 11 years with Memphis. He made All-Star teams with the franchise in 2012, 2015 and 2017, and in 2013 he was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
On Feb. 7, 2019, the Grizzlies traded Gasol to the Raptors, with whom he won his only NBA championship four months later.
In addition to his domestic accolades, Gasol won two Olympic silver medals and two FIBA World Cup titles with Spain in 2006 and 2019.
